Faribault is actively pursuing a sustainable future through various environmental initiatives aimed at reducing energy consumption, promoting renewable energy, and enhancing environmental stewardship.
Energy Action Plan
In October 2023, the Faribault City Council approved a comprehensive Energy Action Plan. This plan sets a goal to avoid an additional 50% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to business as usual. Achieving this target could save the community approximately $5.6 million on energy bills through increased energy efficiency, equating to a cumulative avoidance of 28,992 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions by 2030. This is comparable to removing nearly 6,500 gasoline-powered vehicles from the road for one year.
Solar Energy Initiatives
The city has also explored the potential for on-site solar energy installations on prominent buildings through the “Solar for City and Schools” project. This initiative, supported by a 2017 Seed Grant from the Clean Energy Resource Teams (CERTs), aims to implement solar energy solutions to save money and increase energy efficiency.
Faribault Energy Park
Faribault Energy Park, a 300 MW combined-cycle facility completed in 2007, exemplifies environmental responsibility and innovation. Beyond generating power, the facility integrates educational and recreational opportunities for the community, featuring educational displays on alternative energy sources and park-like wetlands accessible to visitors.
Environmental Commission
The city’s Environmental Commission advises the City Council on environmental issues and opportunities, ensuring that environmental considerations are integrated into the city’s economic and social environments. The commission meets regularly to discuss and promote environmental initiatives within the community.
Stormwater Management
Faribault’s Stormwater division is dedicated to maintaining the city’s stormwater infrastructure, including sewer mains, gutters, drainways, catch basins, and detention ponds. The division also inspects construction sites to ensure compliance with sediment and erosion permit requirements, helping to prevent stormwater pollution and protect local water resources.
Community Engagement
Residents are encouraged to participate in sustainability efforts through various programs. The Home Energy Squad offers home energy audits to help residents lower energy bills and increase home comfort. Additionally, the Energy Assistance Program provides support to income-eligible households for bill payment assistance and energy crisis intervention.
Through these concerted efforts, Faribault is demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, aiming to create a vibrant, diverse community with equitable access to clean, affordable energy for all residents, businesses, and institutions.
