In recent sessions, the Faribault City Council has taken significant steps to enhance the city’s infrastructure and address evolving community needs through strategic zoning amendments.
Infrastructure Developments
On April 28, 2026, the Council approved several critical infrastructure projects:
- Lead Service Line Replacement: Authorized the advertisement of bids for a state-funded project aimed at replacing lead service lines, ensuring safer drinking water for residents.
- Viaduct Park Improvements: Awarded a $666,000 construction contract to Pember Companies for the second phase of Viaduct Park site enhancements, aiming to boost recreational opportunities.
- Sewer System Upgrades: Accepted a bid just under $658,000 from Vortex Services Minnesota LLC for a sewer lining project, part of ongoing efforts to modernize the city’s wastewater infrastructure.
Additionally, the Council approved resolutions for approximately $3.7 million in taxable general obligation bonds to fund these and other vital projects, including the replacement of a siphon box in the sewer system.
Zoning Amendments
To accommodate the city’s growth and changing landscape, the Council has enacted several zoning amendments:
- Data Centers: Approved a zoning text amendment to define and regulate data centers within heavy industrial zones, addressing public concerns about environmental and infrastructure impacts.
- Childcare Centers: Amended zoning regulations to permit childcare centers in public institutional districts, facilitating the establishment of more childcare facilities to meet community demand.
- Hillblock Condominiums Project: Approved a Planned Unit Development (PUD) and Common Interest Community (CIC) plat for the redevelopment of downtown buildings into commercial spaces and 19 residential condo units, contributing to downtown revitalization efforts.
